Privacy Policy

Introduction

Crossword AI ("the App", "we", "our", or "us") is a crossword game. This Privacy Policy explains what the App handles, what leaves your device, and what does not. We have tried to describe this precisely rather than reassuringly: the App has no accounts and keeps your puzzles on your device, but it does talk to our server for AI-generated themed puzzles, and it shows advertising.

By using the App, you agree to this Privacy Policy.

No Account, No Personal Details

There is no sign-up and no login. We never ask for your name, email address, phone number or postal address, and we have no way to identify you as a person.

Your Puzzles Stay on Your Device

• On-device only: the puzzles you play, your progress, your streak, your coin balance and your history are stored only on your device.
• Generated locally: ordinary and daily crosswords are built on your device from dictionaries bundled with the App. They work offline and involve no server.

Themed Puzzles (AI)

When you ask for a themed crossword, the App sends to our server: the theme you typed, the chosen language, grid size and difficulty, and a random device identifier (see below). Our server passes the theme to OpenAI, which returns the words and clues used to build your grid. The grid itself is then assembled on your device.

• Please do not type personal or sensitive information as a theme.
• Generated word sets are cached on our server so that a popular theme does not have to be generated again. A cached set is not linked to you.
• OpenAI processes the theme text as our data processor. We do not send them any identifier of you or your device.

Device Identifier

The App generates a random identifier the first time it runs and stores it on your device. It is not your Apple ID, not your device's serial number, and not the advertising identifier. We use it only to enforce fair-use limits on themed generation (so one device cannot exhaust the service) and to avoid serving you the same cached theme twice. Deleting the App discards it.

Usage Analytics

The App reports simple gameplay events to our server — for example that a puzzle was started, completed or abandoned, with its size and difficulty, and that a paywall or a rewarded video was shown. These events carry the random device identifier described above. They contain no personal data and no content of what you typed. We use them only to understand which parts of the game work.

Advertising

The free version of the App shows advertising supplied by Google AdMob. AdMob may access your device's advertising identifier and collect data about ad interactions in order to serve and measure ads, including personalised ads where you have allowed it.

• On first launch iOS asks whether the App may track you across apps and websites. If you decline, ads are still shown but are not personalised.
• You can change this at any time in iOS Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking.
• A Premium subscription removes all advertising.
• AdMob's own practices are described in Google's privacy policy.

Purchases

Coins, the Premium subscription and the lifetime unlock are sold through the App Store. Payment is handled entirely by Apple; we never see or store your payment details. The App checks your entitlement locally through Apple's StoreKit.

Children

The App is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Your Choices

• Do not use the themed-puzzle feature if you prefer nothing to leave your device.
• Turn off app tracking in iOS Settings to stop personalised advertising.
• Delete the App to remove the device identifier and everything stored locally.

Changes

If this policy changes we will update this page and the date at the top.
